Game description: Just as Kazuma, a former rising star in the Yakuza, emerges from prison after a murder cover-up, 10 billion yen vanishes from the Yakuza vault, forcing him once again into their brutal, lawless world. A mysterious young girl will lead Kazuma to the answers if he can keep her alive.
Yakuza, originally released in Japan as Like a Dragon (龍が如く Ryū ga Gotoku) is an action-adventure video game developed and published by Sega in 2005 for the Sony PlayStation 2. Sega announced that the budget for the game and its sequel together was 2.4 billion yen (21 million US dollars). This game is the first entry in the Yakuza series. A sequel, titled Yakuza 2, was released in Japan on December 7, 2006, and in North America and Europe on September 9, 2008 and September 19, 2008 respectively. Although the game does not explicitly say it, much of the game takes place in Tokyo's Shinjuku ward, most noticeably a recreation of Shinjuku's red-light district Kabukichō, which is famous for its hostess bars (cabarets), host clubs, love hotels, shops, restaurants, nightclubs and its organized crime presence. Although the area was recreated as a fictionalized "Kamurocho district", much of Kabukichō's landmarks remain in an altered, renamed form.

Trivia

  • Original names: 龍が如く (SLPM-66168), 龍が如く PlayStation®2 the Best (SLPM-74234), 龍が如く PlayStation®2 the Best (SLPM-74253)

  • The game has built in 16:9 widescreen mode. Set it in the games Options menu.

Known Issues

Semi transparent line in the middle of the screen

  • Status: Active
  • Type: Minor
  • Description: A semi transparent whitish line appears in the middle of the screen. Not very disturbing, because it's a very thin line and more or less transparent. Most of the time you will probably not notice it.
  • Workaround: You can use software mode to get it away. Or use Texture Filtering only for 3D. Another way to solve this is to use a custom 16:9 resolution. When using scaling the line appears regardless of texture filtering setting.

Ghosting

  • Status: Active
  • Type: Minor
  • Description: In some areas of the game the character models, neon signs, etc. will have a ghosting like effect.
  • Workaround: Half-pixel Offset fixes it, but sadly it also exaggerates the above mentioned line problem (a second line appears across the screen, line colour will turn black). When using a custom 16:9 resolution with half-pixel offset, the lines do not appear. Alpha hack with Skipdraw 1 removes ghosting and misaligned bloom and does not trigger line problem, although causes other minor glitches like shadows drawing over the objects, halos from light sources are lacking and Kage's big screen is blank.

Slowdown with VU hacks

  • Type: Note (not an issue)
  • Description: Using VU Cycle Stealing causes slowdown.
  • Workaround: Do not use VU Cycle Stealing. MTVU seems ok.
