Game description: Deep in the bowels of the Black Mesa Federal Research Facility, a decommissioned missile base, a top-secret experiment goes terribly wrong. As aliens come through the walls and a military death squad shoots everything in sight, young research associate Gordon Freeman must scramble to stay alive. Find your way through the monster-ridden areas of Black Mesa using your wits, limited security clearance, and a variety of weapons, ranging from a crowbar and pistols to a rocket launcher and grenades. With split-screen deathmatch and its exclusive "Decay" single-player and multiplayer cooperative modes, Half-Life is an action experience like no other.
Play as Gordon Freeman, a scientist at Black Mesa, as you try to escape the facility which has been overrun by alien lifeforms.

SPU2-X Played through about 1/4 of the campaign with no issues. There are quite a few native framerate drops throughout the game (the type that would also occur on a real PS2). Increasing EE Cyclerate right up to 300% helps counteract this somewhat. This will increase performance requirements but should be easily doable on a modern midrange CPU, as the game is very easy to emulate. As far as emulation performance goes, it ran full speed the whole time at 8x native res. CynicMimic

The game is having slowdown tendencies on any resolution, despite the speed being at constant ~100%. Mostly acceptable when playing single-player, but co-op (Decay) can start "slide-showing" at what visibly seems to be around 10 FPS during more intense moments. Some minor graphical glitches (mostly lighting) are also present, but otherwise the game is quite playable.

  • Widescreen crops the top and bottom of the 4:3 image, meaning less visible viewing area than when played in 4:3.

Known Issues

General performance issues

  • Type: Note (not an issue)
  • Description: The game has performance issues on native PS2 hardware. PCSX2 matches PS2 vsync frequency, and as such the game will "feel slow" while actually running at the same speed as it would on PS2 hardware.
  • Workaround: No known solution. If your PC has a strong enough CPU, raising the "EE Cyclerate" may help.
