Game description: In God of War, the dark world of Greek mythology comes to life right before your eyes. As you take the role of Kratos, a story unfolds with various plot twists and multiple endings that take you through traps, stunts, and puzzles. With a deep combat system built around double chain blade weapons, the game places you in a variety of environments, in which you must fight challenging enemies, swing on ropes, scale mountain cliffs, swim through rivers, and slide down zip lines.
God of War is a single player game that features a third-person perspective view with a fixed camera. The player controls the character Kratos, a Spartan warrior in the service of the Olympian Gods in a mixture of combat, both normal and quick time, with platforming and puzzle game elements. The player guides the protagonist through a long series of tests, trials and mazes to achieve goals. The game is loosely based on Greek mythology, and is set in Ancient Greece.

BIOS: USA 1.60, Playable with full 60FPS. I have noticed a total freeze occur during the third phase of Ares Boss fight and the growls would just loop on and on. This could possibly be due to mtVU since it is warned it may cause hanging, though not fully certain. This issue has also in fact been experienced by some others on real PS2s, so it is possibly just a bad bug. I suggest using save states in case this ever happens. I suggest enabling mtVU because without it, the game is unable to maintain 60fps in heavy battles. Do use OpenGL (Hardware) or software rendering of any backend to render shadows. OpenGL (Hardware) is much more demanding on the GPU than other hardware backends. Disabling Framebuffer helps however. A GTX 750 Ti is able to run it at 720p maximum. Skryptonyte

Unless you set the CRC hack level to Partial or Aggressive, most of the screen will be bright green, essentially making the game unplayable. I tried Aggressive initially, but that messed up the shadows, so I changed it to Partial, which was fine. Initially there was noticeable lag when fighting multiple enemies, but enabling MTVU eliminated the lag, and from then on, the game ran at full speed. However, it's clearly quite demanding on my PC (it's normally almost silent and the fans got very loud, and the PC became warm to the touch), so I'd recommend using VU cycle stealing for mid to low-end PCs. Once I'd enabled MTVU, there were no other issues. Fully playable. PandoraGTX

Known Issues

Hardware renderer + upscaling artifacts

  • Status: Active
  • Type: Serious
  • Description: From a this post: When playing with hardware renderer upscaled you will see vertical lines. There's also green along the nets of the ship at the beginning of the game. This is just a consequence of upscaling. They go away on software renderer.
  • Workaround: Turn Half-Pixel Offset hack to Special (Texture) to remove vertical lines.

Fixed Issues

Kratos blinking

  • Type: Note (not an issue)
  • Description: When the "VU Cycle Stealing" speedhack is enabled, Kratos starts blinking.
  • Workaround: Has been fixed since at least PCSX2 v1.0.0. For older versions go to Config > Emulation Settings > Speedhacks tab, and set the "VU Cycle Stealing" speedhack back to 0.

Kratos's shadow is missing

  • Status: Fixed
  • Type: Minor
  • Description: In Hardware mode Kratos's shadow is missing.
  • Workaround: Fixed as of one of the 1.7 builds. For older versions Go to Config > Video(GS) > Plugin Settings, make sure the Renderer is set to "OpenGL or Vulkan (Hardware), then click "Enable HW Hacks", go to Configure Hacks and use Round Sprite or use TC Offset to correct the effects. Or switch to Software mode by setting Renderer to one of the "(Software)" options.

Green Tint

  • Status: Fixed
  • Type: Minor
  • Description: There is a green bloomish tint overlayed.
  • Workaround: 1.6: Go to Config > Video(GS) > Plugin Settings, click "Enable HW Hacks", go to Configure Hacks and set Round Sprite to half. 1.7 and later: Go to Config > Graphics Settings, click "Enable HW Hacks", go to Configure Hacks and set Round Sprite to half.

Horizontal lines underwater

  • Status: Fixed
  • Type: Minor
  • Description: In underwater sections horizontal lines appear over the screen.
  • Workaround: Go to Config > Video(GS) > Plugin Settings, click "Enable HW Hacks", go to Configure Hacks and enable the Align Sprite hack. This reduces the number of the horizontal lines underwater. Or go to Config > Video(GS) > Plugin Settings, and set the Internal Resolution to "Native", or set the Renderer to Software mode by selecting one of the (Software) options.

Fog does not shown up right in Hardware mode

  • Status: Fixed
  • Type: Minor
  • Description: When playing on Hardware mode and using upscale settings, fog will not look right.
  • Workaround: Set Blending Accuracy to (High) and use OpenGL API.

Multiple evenly spaced black vertical lines across screen

  • Status: Fixed
  • Type: Minor
  • Description: Multiple black vertical lines span across the screen image.
  • Workaround: Go to Config > Video(GS) > Plugin Settings. Enable HW Hacks and in advanced settings set trilinear filtering to trilinear then half pixel offset to special (credit. However, this issue may still persist when using progressive scan. And yes did test with widescreen mode and has no line bug.

Misaligned black rectangle at bottom of FMV scenes

  • Status: Fixed
  • Type: Minor
  • Description: When using progressive scan, during FMV scenes, a black rectangle obscures part of the bottom of the image, usually in one of the corners.
  • Workaround: That issue appears to be fixed as of v1.7.3113. For older builds Use interlaced (don't enable progressive scan in the game itself). For the PAL version on older PCSX2 builds (May apply to WxWidgets builds) Go to Graphics settings > Hacks > Turn on Memory Wrapping.

Missing audio in in-game cutscenes

  • Status: Fixed
  • Type: Minor
  • Description: Voice clips can be muted during in-game cutscenes such as the first one which is Foul beasts, I will send you back to the depths of Hades.
  • Workaround: Appears to be fixed as of v1.7.3113. For older versions (This applies to the QT builds) Go to Settings > Advanced System > Turn off Enable VU0 Recompiler (Micro Mode).
