1.2.2 GSdx SPU2X Super easy to emulate, responds well to VU Cycle Stealing as there are some slowdowns CPU-wise, but not much; will slow down on Demi and Fire spells due to GPU bottleneck; is fully playable with some buggy areas that are already well documented; use whatever GPU driver works best for you (as long as it supports minimum required OpenGL version) DaTankAC

Final Fantasy X is one of the most compatible games for PCSX2. It's not very picky about the choice of plugins and also doesn't need a high-end PC to run smoothly. There are some known issues with it, but most of them are easy to avoid or very minor.

Try to avoid any combination of EE Cyclerate and VU Cycle Stealing. Most of the time this will lead to false FPS readings and slowdowns instead of more speed. Running the game as an ISO image directly from your hard drive is also a good idea. If you have either Windows Vista or Windows 7 use the "DirectX 10/11 (Hardware)" renderer option in GSdx, it's usually faster and more compatible than the DirectX 9 one. The VSync option in the settings of "GS Window" settings should be deactivated, use PCSX2's Frame Limiter to keep your game from running too fast. Last but not least: try the latest development build of PCSX2 to see if you get better performance.

Many reaction-based minigames are easier if you use the Slow Motion Adjust toggle (Shift+Tab), as the speed of the gameplay will be slowed down by half (or what you have set in the GS tab for the toggle). On the other hand, if your computer is able to run this game at considerably more than 60 FPS, you can fast forward long conversations or your level grinding with either the Turbo Adjust toggle (Tab) or by disabling the Frame Limiter completely (F4).

Speedhacks/Settings

  • EE Cyclerate (2): Noticeable speedup, setting it to 3 causes problems in FMVs.
  • INTC Sync Hack: Small if any speedup, no issues.
  • Idle Loop Fast Forward: Noticeable speedup, no issues.
  • VU Cycle Stealing: Noticeable speedup, but have issues if set higher than 1 (slight).
  • MTVU: Noticeable speedup in quad(4)core CPUs.
  • Recommended to disable Allow 8-bit textures in GSdx.

Known Issues

Characters face the wrong direction during battles

  • Status: Active
  • Type: Minor
  • Description: In certain battles (the Geosgaeno battle in the NTSC-U version, for example), all characters will be facing away from each other.
  • Workaround: Set EE Clamping Mode to "Full" (According to PCSX2, also setting VU Clamping Mode to 'Extra + Preserve Sign' would help this work better) or set EE Round Mode to "Negative".

Slowdown on Shiva summoning

  • Type: Note (not an issue)
  • Description: During scenes like the full Shiva Summoning framerate drops significantly and the GS usage in the GS Window's title bar will show 99%.
  • Workaround: Try a revision before r14xx of GSdx, like r1398. This occurs only if your CPU and video card are not fast enough. Disabling Allow 8-bit Textures might help as well.

Slowdown casting certain attacks

  • Type: Note (not an issue)
  • Description: During fire-based or gravity-based (like Demi) magic casts, a big slowdown can occur and EE, GS and VU usage meters do not go up.
  • Workaround: Reduce the internal resolution. Also disable Allow 8-bit Textures. This occurs only if your video card is not fast enough.

Drops in framerate in Mi'ihen Highroad and the in-game menu

  • Status: Active
  • Type: Minor
  • Description: Although the rest of the game runs fine, the Mi'ihen Highroad area and in-game menu slow down significantly.
  • Workaround: Deactivate the Allow 8-bit Textures option in the settings of GSdx.

Broken Textures

  • Status: Active
  • Type: Minor
  • Description: Small black lines and dots visible at the edges and corners of texts and images.
  • Workaround: This is an unavoidable side effect of using a higher than native resolution. Either set the resolution to Native or set Texture Filtering to Full. In newer versions of GSdx the "Round Sprite" HW Hack can alleviate this issue even further. (Do note however, that this makes the issue less apparent and does not completely disappear.)

Subtitle Text Graphical Glitches (Outlining, Flickering, Graying)

  • Status: Active
  • Type: Minor
  • Description: Subtitle text shows various graphical glitches: uneven outlines (some text has much thicker outlines than other text), flickering text, grayed-out text
  • Workaround: Activate the Allow 8-bit Textures option in the settings of GSdx.

Broken DoF in fights and cutscenes

  • Status: Active
  • Type: Minor
  • Description: The depth of field (DoF) effect appears as ghosting/blurring when upscaling.
  • Workaround: Set Skipdraw to 1.

Flickering FMVs

  • Status: Active
  • Type: Minor
  • Affected Game Versions: PAL
  • Description: FMVs may flicker between the game world and the FMV every 0.2 seconds until the FMV ends.
  • Workaround: Press F9 to use software mode.

Fixed Issues

Dots/Holes in Surfaces, Especially Faces

  • Status: Fixed
  • Type: Minor
  • Description: Dots/holes appear in many surfaces, particularly faces, as described in this thread, Seems to only affect Intel graphics processors.
  • Workaround: Try switching the renderer in the GSdx plugin from Direct3D10/11 to Direct3D9.

Kilika Sending

  • Status: Fixed
  • Type: Serious
  • Description: The game crashes during the cutscene, which shows Yuna's first sending.
  • Workaround: Use EE and VU clamp modes to "Extra" and "Extra+Preserve Sign". ("Normal" clamps should work fine by default)

Alternatively: Use superVU Recompiler if using microVU. (superVU reduces the clamp need, so if "Extra" works for microVU then "Normal" would work with superVU, if "Normal" works with microVU then "None" would work with superVU)

Auron's "Look!" scene causes a crash

  • Status: Fixed
  • Type: Major
  • Description: PCSX2 crashes during the introduction of the game, right after Auron states "Look!"
  • Workaround: Verify that your ISO is not corrupt by comparing your SHA-1 hash with the one on redump.org. Also don't use a program that a virtual drive to mount the ISO. PCSX2 natively supports ISO files.

Missing Geometry

  • Status: Fixed
  • Type: Minor
  • Description: Huge amount of missing polygons with ZeroGS/ZZOgl.
  • Workaround: Activate the FFX-Hack in the settings of the GS-Plugins (only for older versions of this plugin, newer versions have it activated by default).

Djose Temple

  • Status: Fixed
  • Type: Serious
  • Description: With PCSX2 v0.9.6 the game crashes after leaving the Temple in Djose. During the conversation about Yuna's hair the graphics become corrupted and the game might crash.
  • Workaround: This issue was fixed. Use the latest release of PCSX2.

Al Bhed Home

  • Status: Fixed
  • Type: Minor
  • Description: With PCSX2 v0.9.6 the game crashes during the cutscene at Al Bhed Home, similar to the Djose Temple crash.
  • Workaround: This issue was fixed. Use the latest release of PCSX2.

Weird Hair

  • Status: Fixed
  • Type: Minor
  • Description: Some polygons in e.g. Tidus' hair are rendered incorrectly.
  • Workaround: Use microVU Recompiler in VUs settings panel. (microVU is enabled by default on all PCSX2 revisions post 9.8)

Reverse controls in some places

  • Status: Fixed
  • Type: Minor
  • Description: Reverse controls in some places (will move right to left)
  • Workaround: If you're playing NTSC-U version, change VUs Clamping Mode. Else if you're playing International version, change EE/IOP Clamping mode (to Full).
