This issue actually makes not just the first ghost battle, but all of them nearly impossible.
There is a '''real''' solution however, if the above does not work for you: use revision '''2842''', the game works perfectly with that (both with software and hardware renderer).
It is even mentioned in the commit messages, that revision 2853 is the one, that broke the camera attack mode.
