Game description: In the sequel to Silent Hill, Silent Hill 2 follows James Sunderland, whose life is shattered when his young wife Mary suffers a tragic death. Three years later, a mysterious letter arrives from Mary, beckoning him to return to their sanctuary of memories, the dark realm of Silent Hill. You must guide James through all-new environments and creepy new areas closed off in the original game. Real-time weather effects, fog, morphing, and shadows set the stage for heart-stopping frights. Be brave as you journey to uncover the truth.

Completed the greatest hits edition with a few minor issues. Originally started playing on the 1.5.0 git, however reverted to the 1.4.0 stable build because of missing HUD elements in the "memo" menu. Using speedhacks will break cutscenes when transitioning into software mode for FMV sections. Use Bilinear (PS2) texture filtering for accurate HUD elements. CorruptEagle

Original release, game runs at a constant 60fps, 100% speed. Both the Angela FMV in Blue Creek and meeting Maria in Rosewater Park hang without speedhacks for about ten seconds, after recovery the game appears to slow down as it tries to synchronize audio/visuals for several seconds before the FMVs can run properly for the remainder of time they have. The only way to get rid of the hanging is EE Cyclerate to -2 or set it to -1 and EE Cycle Skipping 1, theoretically, Fast CDVD should help with the issue but I haven't seen any consistent improvement from having the option enabled. You must quickly switch off the speedhacks after the FMV is finished because this will make certain sections lag uncontrollably, especially on Hard Mode with tons of monsters on screen, which may make it unplayable for some people. Sometimes sound will not sync properly, such as in the Flesh Lips cutscene, it'll play music before it has to as an example. The hanging problems stopped manifesting after I beat the game a few times to get all the endings, which suggests NG+ fixes the issue for some unknowable reason. I experienced a glitch where the moths in Woodside Apartment wouldn't show up once. There is also the fact that the status screen goes black whenever you look at a memo or access the option menu, this is only fixed using Software Mode, but SW makes the flashlight glitch out completely. Additionally, using anything other than Bilinear (PS2) can make the pause screen move around and blur. The game is fully playable, but proper emulation is still hectic. Ruisu

Known Issues

FMV freeze

  • Status: Active
  • Type: Severe
  • Affected Game Versions: NTSC
  • Description: At certain cutscenes (usually Angela's cutscene in the apartments and Maria's first cutscene) the game will softlock preventing forward progress. This is due to several bizarre expectations the game has with disc drive timings and the game exploiting that fact too much for PCSX2. This seems to depend heavily on the version, however, as some users have reported softlocks while I only encountered a hang of around 10 seconds (1.6.0, NTSC-U Greatest Hits version).
  • Workaround: Just setting EE Cyclerate to -2 or EE Cyclerate to -1 along with EE Cycle Skipping 1 seems to allow most cutscenes to progress. Fast CDVD may also help.

Note for 1.6 and below: Enable "Switch to GSdx software rendering when an FMV plays" under Manual Gamefixes.

Fixed Issues

Grid obscures FMV's

  • Status: Fixed
  • Type: Major
  • Description: A grid appears over videos, obscuring and darkening the image when the resolution is set to anything higher than native.
  • Workaround: Update to the latest nightly version of PCSX2.

Glitchy status screen

  • Status: Fixed
  • Type: Minor
  • Affected Game Versions: NTSC
  • Description: When entering the gameplay menu (Start) and examining an item, the status screen will disappear when returning to the menu. Loading a savestate saved in the menu will cause the status screen to show multicoloured garbage.
  • Workaround: Update to the latest nightly version of PCSX2.

Discoloured text

  • Status: Fixed
  • Type: Minor
  • Affected Game Versions: All
  • Description: Text is grey instead of white.
  • Workaround: Update to the latest nightly version of PCSX2.

Non-Issues

Lack of textures with widescreen patch

  • Type: Not an issue
  • Affected Game Versions: All
  • Description: Textures are missing in some locations with the widescreen patch enabled.
  • Workaround: Disable Widescreen patches.

Wrong snapshot height

  • Type: Not an issue
  • Affected Game Versions: NTSC
  • Description: When taking snapshots in PCSX2 using the F8 key, the image height is cut in half, resulting in distorted images. (PCSX2 takes screenshots using the internal framebuffer resolution, which is often not standard for 4:3 or 16:9)
  • Workaround: Use the printscreen key or use third party screenshot software. Alternatively stretch the PCSX2 image to a standard aspect ratio in editing software. (1.7 Nightly has a proper screenshot feature).
