Game description: In a complex world filled with excess and greed, players can take the role of Tony Montana, one of the most ruthless gangsters ever depicted on film. Highly acclaimed screenwriter, David McKenna, has written an original event-driven storyline for the interactive game that leads the player through a sordid underworld. The Scarface video game creates a gameplay environment that authentically recreates the historical time period of the film, touching on politics, news items and events of the day. Players travel through the steamy, often violent streets of Miami, the irie islands of the Florida Keys, the Bahamas and various other locales and interact with a world full of seedy and dangerous characters to procure information, negotiate business deals, smuggle contraband and avoid rivals and DEA on a mission to rebuild their fallen empire.

Trivia

  • Also known as Scarface
  • Performance problems are due to differences in design between the EE (PS2's CPU) and most x86 CPUs, and the way developers from Radical Entertainment chose to place most of the game load on the EE.
  • The EE could crunch around 6200 MFLOPS, in 32 bits (or single-precision) format. Most multi-core PCs can surpass this, by off-loading calculations to different cores. In PCSX2, this is done through MTVU.
  • PS2 version is known to display the most graphical effects, compared to Xbox, Wii and PC (as of October 23, 2024).

Known Issues

Game freezes after cancelling sub-missions

  • Status: Active
  • Type: Severe
  • Description: Cancelling sub-missions freezes the game, even while in-game music is playing in the background and the UI is still active. Controllers and keyboard binds won't respond at all. The issue is present at either native and up-scaled resolution, Hardware and Software mode, and independently of MTVU being enabled or not.
  • Workaround: Load a previous save-file or save-state.

Slow gameplay

  • Status: Active
  • Type: Major
  • Description: Game (animations, audio, video) slows down constantly on free roaming, firefights and crowded places, whether there's cars or peds. It happens because of the game's heavy reliance on CPU, leading to constant bottlenecks.
  • Workaround: Enable MTVU in Emulation Settings > Game Properties. This fix will enable the emulator to utilize all of your PC's cores, hugely improving performance.

Ocassional freezing while loading side-missions

  • Status: Active
  • Type: Minor
  • Description: Randomly, while side missions are loading, game may seem to freeze. The screen fades to black, the mission prompt appears with the conversation between Tony and Félix playing in the background, but the "PRESS X" prompt won't appear at all.
  • Workaround: Press Triangle, or its equivalent, on your controller or keyboard. That will cause the "PRESS X" prompt to show and resume gameplay.

Note: This may not be an issue. It is probably a PS2 bug, but I do not have access to the real PS2 hardware in order to verify this.

Fixed Issues

Game hangs or crashes while MTVU is enabled

  • Status: Fixed
  • Type: Severe
  • Description: When starting, finishing missions (Pedro's Pawn Shop specifically) or completing side-missions, game will hang and won't respond. In the worst case scenario (mission completed, Pedro's Pawn Shop bought and game saved), starting a new mission will cause a crash to desktop, closing the emulator.
  • Workaround: Update to the latest nightly version of PCSX2.

Missing and disappearing shadows

  • Status: Fixed
  • Type: Minor
  • Description: The stencil shadows are often missing and disappear in the open world when using Hardware mode.
  • Workaround: Update to the latest nightly version of PCSX2.
